Wanna watch a wombat?
Lappi Farm is a real bush stay, and with that comes its fair share of some of Australia's most unique wildlife. You might come across eastern grey kangaroos, red-necked wallabies, alpine blue-tongue lizards, platypus, echidnas and wombats. For the birders, there's a good chance you'll spot a wedge-tailed eagle, Australia's largest eagle and one of the largest in the world. You might also see the sacred kingfisher or its bigger cousin the kookaburra, cockatoos of all kinds, owls and tawny frogmouths, parrots, wrens and a whole host of other beautiful birds.
How to spot them
The local kangaroos and wallabies often hang around near the cabins, so they're easy to spot, often with a baby on board. The little ones are super cute when they poke their heads out.
Blue-tongues and echidnas are out and about mostly in the warmer months, which around here is November to April. If you want to see a platypus, it's all about patience and being quiet. They're most active around dawn and dusk. They're shy creatures, but give it a little while sitting by the river and they'll normally pop up. Come and see us and we'll tell you the best spots to try.
Wombats are nocturnal and come out from dusk to dawn. If you arrive at night, you'll often see one of our resident wombats, Robert, who hangs around the start of our driveway near the water most evenings. Wombats will often happily let you watch them from a distance of 10–15 metres or so. Get too close, though, and they'll be off down their burrow in no time.
What to bring
Your best bet is to pack a good torch or headlamp, warm clothes (even summer nights can get cool), good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. We recommend long pants year-round to protect your legs. A CamelBak is perfect, or bring a water bottle and backpack. Don't forget a camera or your phone for photos, and when you get here, come and see us for tips on the best walks, day and night. Watch your step at night: it's a natural bush setting, and a rolled ankle can really put a dampener on your stay!
