River adventures

A woman and her dog in a canoe on the Snowy River

With about 1.6 km of Snowy River frontage, the river really is the heart and soul of our property. Twelve kilometres upstream is Jindabyne Dam, built during the original Snowy Hydro scheme, where the water is released before meandering through the Jindabyne gorge to reach us. The rock and sand in the gorge filter the water, and what we end up with is a crystal-clear river, warmed by the rocks in the gorge all summer long. Absolutely divine.

A swimming spot on the Snowy River

Secret swimming spots

We have an amazing swimming spot with a beach and picnic area, easily reached right near our sauna and perfect for little ones to play in the shallows under supervision. But there are so many other hidden spots along the river where you'll feel like the only people in the world, and the only thing that might disturb you is the local wildlife.

A juvenile platypus at Lappi Farm

Spot our resident platypus

Speaking of wildlife, you can't go past an encounter with these amazing critters. We're lucky to have an abundance of platypus in the river, often spotted early morning and late afternoon as they play at the surface. They're a unique semi-aquatic, egg-laying mammal, and the males have a venomous spur on their back legs. The little one in the photo was a juvenile who wandered into our house yard. After a quick check to make sure he hadn't been hurt by any predators, it was back to the river for him.

Paddling on the Snowy River

Get out for a paddle

There's so much to see on the water that you miss from the bank: trout swimming below you, a rare short-finned eel, incredible birdlife, or just the calm of floating along in pure peace. Getting out in a canoe, kayak or on a paddleboard is extra special. We have canoes, paddleboards and kids' kayaks for guests to use, along with life jackets and all the advice you need to enjoy the experience.

Fishing on the Snowy River

Cast a line

The Snowy River is home to trout, which are restocked every few years, so take a shot at catching dinner (trout season runs between the October and June long weekends, and a licence may be required). If you're keen to learn the art of fly fishing, the guides at Clearwater Fly Fishing can show you all the tricks. Call them on 0417 240 797.
